Well....he was a little more cagey and weasel-like. He feigned ignorance and claimed he hadn’t actually seen the bill (an outright lie) and indicated he would support it. Of course as everybody at the time knew and as even his hagiographers today admit, Abe orchestrated the writing and passage of the Corwin Amendment.
This was entirely consistent with what he had always said. He was in favor of protecting southern slavery.
He was a master at dirty politics, and most especially bribery and intimidation. Even his law cases show a tendency to play games with the law, in the manner of all the other sleazy lawyers.
Would you happen to have any references which we could show to our FRiends? :)
I may come across it some time in the future, but if you have any ready references, I can bookmark them now. Seems like the sort of thing that would come in Handy Dandy in some future discussions.
I know some of them put a lot of stock into what Lincoln's biographers say, because I have been informed many times that those biographers refuse to agree that Lincoln issued an arrest warrant for Chief Justice Tanney, despite his own friend and body guard claiming that he did.
I've gone back through the relevant parts of my Lincoln biographies by David Herbert Donald, Ronald C. White, and Doris Goodwin, and in none of them do I find anything about Lincoln orchestrating the Corwin Amendment. Nothing at all. Can you please point me to the hagiographers biographers that detail Lincoln's involvement? Thanks in advance.
