After the meeting yesterday, we have good news and bad news.
All doctors agreed that Richie is not a candidate for Rehab. He is too young (Guess they didn't know he was only 19 months old when they moved him there. /S) Why did they move him to rehab if they had no intention of helping him there? He has not been out of his bed since being moved. He is getting physical therapy on his arms and legs. The same as he was getting in ICU. Brian was told that Richie could come back for rehab when he is older.
The plans are to release him to home care in a couple of weeks. (Brian is excited about this.) Brian will be able to put him in his chair and move him from room to room. It will be more like a normal life. The hospital staff has completed all of the documentation to see that he has everything he will need at home.
They will not replace his trach because it does not seem to be a problem. Yeah .... Richie will be able to continue 'talking'. They may use a different type of PEG for feeding. They assured Brian that it would be able to be removed later. Richie has lost some weight so they are going to increase his calorie intake. He isn't eating enough on his own. I think this will change once he gets home.
The doctors seem to have given up on any further improvement in his condition. They must not be aware of the Power of Prayer.
Richie seems to have learned how to play the nurses ... I told you he was smart.
His smile gets him lots of TLC. Whenever a nurse come to clean his trach, he frowns and appears to start to cry. Nurse says "Okay, Sweetie, I will come back later" Then Richie goes back to watching his favorite cartoon show.
Also, if Brian needs a day to rest, Richie is entitled to a home nurse 24/7. Brian plans to take care of his son himself. BUT a nurse will be available whenever Brian needs a break.
As you can tell, I am upset about a lot of this. I'm not sure why they encouraged Brian with the thought of rehab and then did NOTHING. He feels that he was lied to. He thinks they just wanted to get rid of him since there was nothing they could do.
Grandpa called me with this update instead of sending a text. So ...... I hope I didn't forget anything. And please excuse my rambling.
