As Mickey Kaus tweeted, he sensed there must have been a consultant behind Romney’s spectacular failing strategy -- you know, the kind of geniuses who sandbagged their candidate’s running mate Sarah Palin, the sort who talked Al Gore into wearing brown and stuffing a sock in his pants, who persuaded John Kerry to speak in phony backwoods talk to “get me a hunting license”, and who this week encouraged Elizabeth Warren to enact a folksy News Year’s Eve in her kitchen drinking beer out of a bottle.

The clown show is international. Emmanuel Macron's communications director Sylvain Fort is resigning - that'd be the guy who thought it was smart to have Macron tell the people whose taxes he just raised that the money was going to African development programs. If anyone is most responsible for the Yellow Vest insurgency it's he.

I mention him because this is what an autocratic, ideology-sodden party looks like when not only its principals but its staffers are completely out of touch with the constituents. Our own elites are precisely the same. "Nobody in Washington wants The Wall", bleated one of them last week. And after all, it is what they want, not what the people want, that matters.
