That certainly would have been the moral thing to do. But would the outcome have been any different? Consider Yugoslavia. Every person there had equal rights. Yet in 1991 the place erupted into tribal violence, and the country broke apart.

Fun fact: there has never been a country with a nonwhite majority, a significant white minority, and no attempt at the genocide of the latter by the former.
Sub-saharan are generally incapable of maintaining the concept of the Rule of Law, which is utterly alien to Africa. Best I can tell, there is no historical code of law indigenous to sub-saharan Africa. It is simply not part of their culture - a culture so primitive that many parts of the continent did not even have the wheel invented by the time the Europeans showed up in the 19th century.
Apartheid was the only possible workable system under those conditions. Now black South Africans will kill the whites and as a direct consequence starve to death themselves in large numbers. Who is better off with this outcome?
It wouldn’t have worked; Portugal and France really tried to make Angola and Algeria respectively extensions of their homelands, and it was unworkable. Both fought long wars to make it so, and in the end they both packed up and left. The economic strain of re-absorbing those returning citizens crippled both countries for decades.
The only thing which might have saved them would have been importation of white Europeans (or Americans), and expulsion of all blacks.
But the South African upper class wanted to keep their back servants and cheap black workers. Sounds like a familiar story.
