California community college students could reap the benefits of Democratic dominance in the state Legislature, with lawmakers pushing for the state to cover the cost of two years of tuition for students who commit to enrolling full time right out of high school.
During the 2018 midterms, the free-college mantra of Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders became a key campaign promise for liberal candidates in congressional and state races. Gov.-elect Gavin Newsom pledged during his own campaign to make the first two years of community college free in California, as did some of his Democratic challengers.
This is about strengthening the middle class, said Assemblyman Miguel Santiago, D-Los Angeles, who partnered with Assemblymen David Chiu, D-San Francisco, and Kevin McCarty, D-Sacramento, to pass a bill last year making the first year of community college free for full-time freshmen.
The two-year savings for a student taking 12 units a semester would be $2,208. That could mean the difference between having to take out more loans or pick up extra hours at a job. But it also costs taxpayers millions a year.

Stated far better than I was going to try to do....
Free? Says the taxpayers will pay,not free to them
Thanks, I can do without your comments defending the sad state of our community colleges and running down a successful woman.
You post like a liberal woman.
Right now they need 2 years of college to catch up with the basics we had graduating HS 40 years ago.
College administration and excessively grand facilities are what's driving cost.
“You post like a liberal woman.”
I post like a woman who had a son who just fooled around in high school, went to a community college in the 80s and straightened out——then went further, got his degree and then his Master’s .
Conservatives don’t always think alike on some issues-—we have different life experiences. If we all had to think alike then we would be no better than liberals.
.
I guess that means the teachers and staff are all donating their time and the physical facilities are all being donated by the college organizations and the entire operation is not costing anybody anything, right?
Oh, wait. You mean we taxpayers are paying the freight and not the students? That means it is not really "free". It is just "free" for the students just like a prison is "free" for the inmates.
This is just another vote-buying scam by Liberal politicians for the benefit of their own self-serving agendas.
Yep ... that and ridiculously high wages for professors.
I have a two year degree from a community college. I have been gainfully employed since my graduation back in '92. Yeah, I've experienced layoffs, but not for extended periods of time. At one point, I was in management making close to a 6 figure income.
Isn’t Bernie’s wife a college president who ran a free school?
(Into bankruptcy)

It was Burlington College and she did drive it into dirt. I don't think it was quite "free" enough to succeed in Bernie's paradise of the VermontSSR.
She was investigated by Obama's Justice (Sic) Department for numerous crimes but (surprise!) they dropped the case even though $millions were lost or defrauded. The college eventually went out of business after she was forced to resign.
