Back in the 50s, early 60s, there was a TV show where the host would interview famous men/women of the past. Great stuff.
Have wracked my brain, but can't recall the show's name or host.

You may be thinking of Steve Allen’s “Meeting of Minds” on PBS in the late 70s.

In the 50’s there was a CBS series ‘You Are There’ in which famous events such as the Andrew Johnson Impeachment vote in the Senate are treated as contemporary news events. Regular CBS news staff from New York, where the show was made, appeared as 20th century newsmen interviewing or asking for the take on events historical figures such as Thaddeus Stevens or Johnson's defense lawyer Reverdy Johnson (no relation). Walter Cronkite was the show MC and lead journalist. It was pretty accurate in depicting the historical characters.
