Any investment gurus out there have ideas of how to “short” the South African economy? It’s obvious to anyone paying attention that S.A. is on a kamikaze mission to turn itself into Zimbabwe or Venezuela. This is going to end very badly.
I'd short the Rand through currency future contracts. You can lose your ass though because China, Russia, and Soros will prop up the currency for a while while the REAL money leaves in underwear and suitcases.
De Beers is building a synthetic diamond plant in Oregon. Planning for diamond supply problems in the future? Who knows.

Ask Soros...except he’s probably on the side of the anarchists....Hope all the idiots in this country who advocated for disinvestment are happy. Guess who they were!!
Hello Hollywood...
Any investment gurus out there have ideas of how to short the South African economy?

Maybe buy Platinum mines outside of SA ,, PGE (group ten metals) ... The SA mines will operate while the people starve so it may take a while.

Soros is way ahead of you ... this is his MO
I may not be an investment "guru", but I have done OK. Personally I would not invest for or against SA -- ever.
SA has been and will continue to be a political football and various governments will try various bailouts, all for reasons which may well defy conventional logic. I am certain there is money to be made, but it is going to be like having a front row seat for an elephant fight. There is a good chance that you can get squashed without anyone having any bad intentions toward you.
I am going to hide in the tall grass and watch this fight from a distance. There are plenty of investment opportunities in the good old US of A without taking on the risk associated with political stability in Africa.
OTOH if you can name a dozen people who profited from the conversion of Rhodesia into Zimbabwe and get their advice you may come out ahead. I sure can't name anyone in that category other than local government officials.
