I was thinking about that yesterday for some reason. Property taxes are a big problem for lots of older people because cities and towns have used them like automatic teller machines. I am thinking I will retire to a low property tax state someday (and yes I will bring my conservative voting habits with me).

People believed in limited government, with limited costs; now people want the government to take care of them from cradle to grave with no expectations of the people themselves - and no contributions required.

Thats one reason a cowboy in the American west in the 19th century earned an average of $40 a month (+ room and board) and did just fine. That 19th Century $40 was two ounces of gold, which at current prices is $2,476.00
Pay the average modern person that, on top of free room and board, and he will consider himself doing OK too.
