Exactly. IT’s probably not illegal, it comes down again to trying to get Trump to lie about it.

Oddest part of the story, is that “sources” often turns into “well placed source”. They also apparently saw what they were told was a memo from the ecuidorian secret police.
They ALSO report that people who visit the embassy are logged by the security, “BUT” that Manifort was not ever recorded by security as entering.
And Assange says he never met Manafort, Manafort says he didn’t meet Assange. THe meetings were in 2013, 2015 (both before there was a Trump campaign that Manifort worked on), and the last was in 2016, just AFTER the government claimed that the russians started hacking the DNC server — so the meeting in 2016 couldn’t be said to be Paul getting Assange to talk to the russians to do a hack.
And the “Ecuidorian secret police’ memo says the person who saw Assange was “Paul Maniford”. (which the newspaper then marks with “[sic]” as it they somehow know it was a typo). There are of course thousands of poeple named Paul Maniford, like Paul Maniford, the management consultant and world traveler who lives in California.
Ineresting that if you read through Assange’s twitter, what you see is that it is nearly impossible for ANYBODY to get in to see him.
“Around the time”, a clever way of pretending some causality which can’t be true.
The other being they had to say “around March of 2016”, because we already have been told that hte russians started their hacking in March of 2016, in the indictments against the 12 russian entities.
So if Manafort went after March of 2016, it couldn’t have been part of a plot to GET the russians involved; but by saying March, they can’t pretend he was working for Trump, hence “around the time”, even though it’s in the wrong direction.
And of course, 2013 and 2015 have nothing to do with anything.
THe thought is that Manafort said he never met Assange, and this is a leak to get people to believe Manafort met him 3 times, so they can claim Manafort is lying and breaking his deal — I assume because Mueller didn’t get anything from the deal, and needs an excuse.
They must be disappointed he didn't wear his ostrich jacket.
I can understand someone wanting to fabricate this story but I wonder how they believed they could get away with it.
Maybe it was really Manafort in drag.
