Hillary's frank advice to European leaders: stop the rise of right-wing populists then get a handle on your immigration crisis. She said migrants and refugees that have flooded into the EU since 2015 have thrust immigration into the spotlight and fueled the rise of global hardline leaders.....she praised Germany's Angela Merkel for her compassion, and cautioned that countries cant leave the door open forever.
Europe needs to get a handle on migration because that is what lit the flame, Clinton said regarding the rise of right-wing populists like Hungarys Viktor Orbán. Europe must send a very clear message we are not going to be able to continue provide refuge and support because it will continue to roil the body politic.
Germany, Greece and Italy have argued that other nations throughout the region need to share the burden. But central and eastern Europe countries have refused to help out. Migration numbers have dropped precipitously from their height in 2015.
Clinton was interviewed along with former British PM Tony Blair and former Italian PM Matteo Renzi. The two both agreed with Clintons statement that the immigration issue was directly responsible for fueling the populist trend. Youve got to deal with the legitimate grievances and answer them, which is why today in Europe you cannot possibly stand for election unless youve got a strong position on immigration because people are worried about it, Blair said. Youve got to answer those problems. If you dont answer them then you leave a large space into which the populists can march.
Clinton said, People dont want that much responsibility and freedom. They want to be told what to do and where to go and how to live
