The North and South Korean militaries completed withdrawing troops and firearms from 22 front-line guard posts on Saturday as they continue to implement a wide-ranging agreement reached in September to reduce tensions across the worlds most fortified border, a South Korean Defense Ministry official said.
South Korea says the military agreement is an important trust-building step that would help stabilize peace and advance reconciliation between the rivals
South Korea reportedly has about 60 guard posts bunker-like concrete structures surrounded with layers of barbed-wire fences and manned by soldiers equipped with machine guns stretched across the ironically named Demilitarized Zone.
The need for caution here is obvious. The problem with grand, sweeping gestures of peace when they arent being met with equal moves from the other side of the table is that you can wind up presenting an opening to someone who may, someday soon, once again be your enemy. Progress toward denuclearization of the North has essentially stalled since their last meeting with our Secretary of State. And Kims talk of reducing his conventional weapons along the border hasnt materialized in any substantial way either.

How about Trump buys those 22 stations and moves them to the U.S. / Mexico border?
Amen.
I wonder if the media will report when the countries are re-united?
I just love a happy story. This is very good news and a surprise from President Trump.
I am also happy about EOs relaxing on businesses, that alone was worth voting for.
Now Build that wall and lock her up...
Way too many of the American public are morons. They will never understand this or realize then significance of all of this.
God bless Donald trump.
I pray this isnt some demented plan by the Norks to invade South Korea. Prayers that all goes well.
If they do it will be because Obama blazed the way to reunification and Trump finished what little was left to do.
It’s not. They know Trump will raze the place to a glass parking lot if the try. Besides, I believe little Kim is seeing the upside to normalization.
“I wonder if the media will report when the countries are re-united?”
Yes, they will, but they will say that it would have happened sooner if it had not been for Donald J. Trump’s “intervention.” Like the economy, Obola & Co’s “efforts were on the verge of succeeding when he was forced by “unfortunate circumstances” to have to vacate the US P Resident’s Office. He was trying to clone Brenda Snipes when his “curtain came down!”
They will REALLY HATE IT and hate Trump if he manages to bring peace between Israel and the Arabs in the ME!!
A South Korean Defense Ministry official said on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018,... the North and South Korean militaries have completed 'withdrawing troops and firearms' from 22 front-line guard posts as they continue to implement a wide-ranging agreement reached in September to reduce tensions.
Both sides symbolically leaving 'one' demilitarized guard post on each side. They plan to jointly verify the results in December.
tallest soldiers whenever they interacted with N. Korean soldiers as an
intimidation factor...also interesting that in 2013 North Korea 'lowered' their
minimum height requirements for the military.
” ....and hate Trump if he manages to bring peace between Israel and the Arabs in the ME!!”
And what will all the Secular Progressive (i.e. Godless) American Jews who vote RAT do if he does? Oye vey! Such a thing should happen! UpChuckie Schumer will $hit a brick!
Journalist ignorance. The demilitarized zone is not ironically-named. The guard posts arent in the DMZ they are along the southern perimeter of the DMZ.
Even while the Chinese do not want a refugee invasion from North Korea, North Korea has long been viewed by China, the Chinese Politburo, and the leadership of the PLA as a provincial southern “shield”.
The reason why China has been at the core of all “peace talks” between Washington and NORK’s, is because of China’s position.
While Trump and Washington have applied significant pressure, behind the scenes, it is very much between China and DC, and to a lesser extent Russia.
There are some in various agencies of our government, who believe the South Korean leader is acting in China’s behalf, or even as an agent of China.
The importance of North Korea, as a “southern shield” to China, is no longer what it was, as China has moved strategic assets all throughout the SCS. As well, nuclear testing has already yielded much of the knowledge base China was looking for in the nuke tests conducted in North Korea. Not to mention, the largely destroyed test site, and the radiation cloud China became very concerned with, leaking out of the collapsed test site. Additionally, while the world was focussed on the NORK’s launching missiles, China achieved the fastest and longest range hypersonic missile tests in the world. North Korea has long provided China the diversion it needed to carry out various testing.
Bottom line, while North Korea remains geopolitically important to China, NK is no longer as important to Chinese defensive strategy, and China’s growing regional military hegimony.
However, it is even more true, a demilitarized or undefendable South Korea is also in the PLA’s best short term military interest and strategic planning.
The road forward is clearly more treacherous than most will understand.
Reunification would bankrupt South Korea given the disparities in development between the two halves. If the regime changes in DPRK the south will want to maintain DMZ fortifications to keep the entirety of the north from flooding the south.
Any freedom loving South Koreans, should probably strongly consider moving out of the region, before the DMZ is removed, and the US is asked or forced to leave.
China is only going to continue to gain ultimate military and geopolitical hegimony.
That possibility is what frightens me.
If the DMZ is removed, and Koreans disarm, it can only be expected there will be significant euphoria in the near term.
However, it will become blatantly evident at some point what the real Chinese game is. Really, why settle for a poor North Korea, when you can geopolitically, and in time, militarily enforce PLA demands across the entire Korean peninsula. In this case, the US would in time be forced out.
