You mean like Twitter and Facebook provide their own hosting? Which they don’t... They run on Oracle ExaData servers hosted in AWS. (Or Google CP). All Facebook does is buy capacity by the rack, using its own customized servers.

I plan to open a site and just assumed that a hosting service was the way to go.
Maybe a link to an article of it’s complicated?

Even if they host them selves. There will always be a backbone provider willing to cut them off.
