New York City Police Commissioner James O’Neill said Thursday that law enforcement officials are treating the suspicious packages containing possible explosives sent to high-profile Democrats this week as “live devices," not “hoax devices.”
“This is something that should be taken seriously,” O’Neill told reporters at the press conference in New York. “We are treating them as live devices."
“As far as a hoax device, we’re not treating it that way,” O’Neill added.
His remarks came after some conservatives, including radio host Rush Limbaugh, suggested that the bombs could have been part of a hoax or false-flag operation.
Officials said Thursday that they are treating the suspected bombs as “live devices” and “suspected” explosives. At the same time, they offered little details of the ongoing investigation, refusing to answer even whether they had concluded privately one way or another that the devices were actually meant to explode.
The FBI, along with state and local officials across the country, is spearheading the investigation into, so far, 10 suspicious packages in total.
The packages, all similar in appearance, were addressed to former President Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton, billionaire philanthropist George Soros, CNN, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), former Attorney General Eric Holder, actor Robert DeNiro and former Vice President Joe Biden.
All were discovered between Monday and Thursday of this week. In almost all of the cases, the packages were intercepted by authorities before reaching the targets. Officials in New York cautioned Thursday that the investigation is in the early stages and ongoing, and warned that further packages could be found.
“We’re doing our best to make sure if there are any out there, we identify them quickly,” O’Neill said.
Authorities have sent all 10 packages to the FBI’s laboratory in Quantico, Va., for further testing.
“We are working quickly to process and analyze relevant information,” said William Sweeney, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s New York field office. “We will continue to do so for as long as it takes.”
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) again described the attempted attacks as an act of terrorism.
“It’s absolutely terrorism because it’s an effort to use violence to make a political impact," de Blasio said, echoing language he used the day before.
They have to treat them all as real even if suspected of being fake, just as any kid who says “I could just die, I wish I was dead” has to be sent in for psych evaluation - just in case.
I see your point. I believe the prevarication from the authorities will continue for some time. The feds often as not handle something this high profile by first leaking, smearing, pursuing and crushing one or more innocent people based on some hack ‘profiler’, destroying a few careers (including their own), going through a wholesale change of the investigation team,getting some newspapers sued for defamation and then pinning the whole caper on a guy no one heard of but who should have been suspect numero uno from the beginning. On the flip side - treating them as if they were all hoax-duds, before ascertaining that is the case, would be lunacy.....no different than treating a gun as if it is loaded even though you’re ‘pretty sure’ it ain’t...
Yeah. Similar to Bruce Jenner getting treated like a woman but we all know he’s male.
Any combat vet could see after the first picture they were inert fakes even without knowing the composition inside. Notice they have not stated the 'ert' compounds in these devices. Even 50 years ago at 18 years old I could set up enough explosives and det cord to clear a stand of trees for a medivac or blow a bunker or tunnel. Us young'uns loved blowing crap up and I bet millions of vets saw the fakery as soon as the first picture displayed. Creating booms and destruction was our job in theater.

I've decided that the proper parsing of this statement means that "authorities" are not hiding behind steel barriers as they analyze the bombs, they are devoting manpower and preparing charges as if these were "live devices."
It's like charging someone with attempted murder when they used a toy gun, because the target (and police) didn't know it was a toy gun at the time.
The MSM is obviously playing this phrase up as the "authorities" still believe that "live devices" are out there, meaning that some wild conservative wacko is still a danger to liberals. We know that was never the case, and the MSM knows that, too, but they have a statement from an "authority" that they can twist to extend their narrative for another few days.
