TAPACHULA, Mexico/GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - A group of more than a thousand Central Americans in Guatemala headed toward the Mexican border on Tuesday as the first caravan of migrants paused in southern Mexico on its planned journey toward the U.S. border.
U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to begin cutting millions of dollars in aid to Central America and called the caravan in Mexico a national emergency as he seeks to boost his Republican Partys chances in the Nov. 6 congressional elections.
The caravan, which has been estimated at 7,000 to 10,000 mostly Honduran migrants fleeing violence and poverty in their homelands, is currently in the town of Huixtla in Chiapas state around 31 miles (50 km) north of the Guatemalan border.
Mexicos government said in a statement on Tuesday that it had received 1,699 requests for refugee status, including children. The government estimates there are around 4,500 people in the group.

Well, do be honest, this is a great thing for the election, if handled properly.
So far, Trump’s bark has been worse than his bite. Weak responses such as cutting aid to nations that should be receiving no aid at all. He should be moving troops to the border, talking about declaring war, not suggesting that the only issue is the composition of the invading mob.
If it requires war, then so be it. We invest trillions of dollars in muslim sh*tholes 10,000 miles away, and yet we can't protect our own borders. If it takes war and trillions, then better spend it here for our own defense, better spent here than in Islmastan.
They know the summer heat is over and done so this is prime time to bum rush our border.
Guns or not, it’s an invasion force
I don’t care if everyone in Guatemala invades Mexico.
They ain’t coming here.
....50% tax...on remittances to Mexico and Guatemala...
Excellent. Additionally Trump should requisition 500+ military transport buses to be used for those who may penetrate border control at each likely transit point, tweeting a week before the mid-terms that each bus will be directed to return to its home base with occupants for determination of their refugee status. Perhaps the prospect of several months under guard at Fort Benning, for example, will dilute their zeal to come here at all.
A Campbell Soup executive fingered Soros’ Open Society Foundation as central perps in a tweet.
Instead of caravan, couldn’t we call it infantry, and instead of women and children, couldn’t we call them camp followers and their b______?
I suppose I am not being very nice, but I am really fed up with this. This has got to stop. We are being invaded by enemies who intend to plunder us and take away our sovreignty.
Start spreading the concertina wire in the places where they usually cross. Get the drones up so that we can see them approaching the border before they actually get on the border.

Wrong! They should not be allowed into the USA at all — even if we have to fight in Mexico to stop it. Once they get in, the courts will try to keep them here.
This isn’t the government of Guatemala’s fault. Think about it... if their citizens want to leave, what should they do? Put up a wall to keep them from leaving? We were opposed to the Berlin wall, remember?
The problem is Mexico; Mexico is letting them in.
Bravo.
If enough of them come, get here in time and do enough damage, maybe we’ll keep a House majority and see better immigration laws. If we get the Senate majority, that’s already improved with some of the bad actors getting out.
If Trump was already getting the troops on the border the horde would get the message and many of them would get discouraged and go home. Also, their families here would start calling them scared for their lives.
Remember a few years ago how the Mexican government printed a comic book instructing Mexican illegals how to evade capture?
San Diego was being flooded with Mexicans who would run though people’s back yards. San Diego had to build a wall to keep them out.
