Who has an idea about how the troops can be strategically deployed on American soil and yet prevent any trespass of the border? This horde would bust through chain-link fences in seconds and then be upon American soil. And let's assume that we won't be lobbing tear gas. What are the likely/reasonable options available to our commanders?

What options are available depends on exactly where the incursion takes place (terrain, time of day and so on), I would think. Then all of that will be governed by whatever ROEs they are given.
Right now, they are too far away and have not, as far as I know, committed to a point or points of entry to plan anything beyond a basic generalized response.
While there are various units that have been given Warning Alerts, there is not yet any deployment of any of the elements - but they do not have far to go. Give it another week.
Look to Israel and they will show you how to deal with hordes of terrorists and criminals. They deal with this crap 24/7 and have since the beginning of the State of Israel!! Gaza is a perfect example!

And sent there one way via boats! If they refuse, then they are arrested and placed in a Mexican prison. The other 20% who are women and children given options to go home, or also be placed in a Mexican prison....
If this happened in a more pragmatic era of our history, the ringleaders and coordinators (Soros, Bam, Hill etc) would be arrested for treason/sedition, and U.S. troops would welcome that crowd with live rounds.
That's how the Hungarians do it. And it works. But the Hungarians have a safety valve. The "migrants" just bypass Hungary and head for Germany. So nobody gets hurt.
But there is no safety valve in the US case. So as you noted, if Trump decides to defend the border, somebody is going to get hurt.
Hungarian border fence:
The military should handle it like an emergency deployment - a big logistics exercise.
Declare martial law along the border area effected, to allow immediate deportation without hearing.
Put enough personnel on the ground to zip tie infiltrators, tag them with an identifier number, and load them on buses.
Run the stream of buses from the border to the nearest airbase, and capture their identification information. Load them onto planes.
Run a flow of aircraft from there to Soto Cano Airbase (Palmerola) in Honduras. Give each detainee one MRE and some water. Send an MP Battalion down there to handle receiving the planes.
Run busloads outside the gate, disembark the detainees, and remove their zip ties. Tell them Adios. Mexicans too.
Activate LOGCAP contracts as needed for the transportation and life support required for the detainees and troops.
Start off with battlefield triple concertina wire fence along the entire border and arming the troops with rubber bullets and laser guns. Treat the border like a battlefield. Bring in searchlight battalions like we had in Korea to light up the fenced area and take away darkness to operate. They will bounce light off the clouds onto the battlefield. And that’s for openers.

Haven’t seen many mobs, huh? They will crush people without regard. Those pressing in the back aren’t affected by the casualties up front.
Gassing the entire crowd will disperse them, but the entire production is to precipitate that very response. Even non-lethal weapons provide bad optics.
Put them to work building the border wall, from the Mexican side, then, when they’re done say “Oooops”.
Seriously, we need to treat them like an invading army, and once deterred, build a real @#$#@$ border wall !!!
We need to have the Intelligence Community (IC) swamp this operation immediately, to determine where they will hit the border, to start preparing that sector. We can’t be everywhere at once. Have each Border patrol Sector start planning/preparation for a mass event.
The IC should also detail the threats within the caravan - provocatuers, criminals, terrorist infiltrators, weapons, planned tactics - as well as the organizers and supporters.
