As 2017 drew to a close, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) urged Americans to have more children. To keep the country great, he said, we’re “going to need more people.”
“I did my part,” the father of three declared.
Ryan’s remarks drew some eye rolls at the time, but as new data about the country’s collapsing fertility rates has emerged, concern has deepened over what’s causing the changes, whether it constitutes a crisis that will fundamentally change the demographic trajectory of the country — and what should be done about it.
Women are now having fewer babies and at older ages than in the past three decades, a change that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) reported this year, and which was confirmed this week with the release of additional data that shows that the trend holds across races and for urban and rural areas.
The CDC said Wednesday that the total fertility rate — a theoretical figure that estimates the number of births a woman will have in her lifetime — fell by 18 percent from 2007 to 2017 in large metropolitan areas, 16 percent in smaller metro areas and 12 percent in rural areas. A similar downward trend holds for white, black and Hispanic women.
Fertility and birthrates are among the most closely monitored indicators of a country’s economic health. When too high, a surging youth population might be unable to find work and become susceptible to unrest. When too low, economies can rapidly contract, and a small working-age population has to support a large retired population. The United States is somewhat more buffered because of its relatively high levels of immigration, but if the decline in fertility continues, demographers say, the country may face an extreme population imbalance

Christianity abandoned large families decades ago. Protestants long ago and Catholics since the 60s. The abortion rate for Christians is statistically the same as the general population as well. You can hardly blame Obama for that.
For those other comments about raising children, as the father of a very large family, I can tell you it’s not about money. It’s about commitment—kinda like marriage-another dying institution.

People have been taught, women primarily, that marriage is something to leave. 80% of divorces are filed by women, because there is zero downside for them and all the upside. Women are not the gender divorce raped in “family” courts thst make over 50 billion a year off families. Men are just utilities, appliances to be swapped out, and the state can force them to take care of wifey after shes gone, and the man is the only parent that has any legal responsibility to take care of the children he cannot see or have around anymore, that will be living with mommy and the new replacement boyfriend (aka the future a55hole she breaks up with).

I don’t disagree that the legal system plays a large part, but that followed the abandonment of a Biblical worldview. The church abdicated her role in charity and subjected herself to government intervention for the price of limited liability and tax exemptions. What’s the destruction of the family and a few tens of million murdered children compared to that?

I’m a firm believer that teachers shouldn’t raise our children for (or in spite of) us. My kids didn’t go to sex education classes until they were over 16 and were invited to ask me or their mom anything. I also made sure they were given a qualified education in the basics and not scientifically created to match an agenda. If they came home and asked me about something that I felt was inappropriate or a lying action, either straight out or not telling the entire truth, I wouldn’t call the school, I went down there. They never seemed to have a legitimate answer to my questions at which time I asked that the student be moved to a class that didn’t contain the type of politics they were spewing. And until they were in their sophomore year of high school, I protected them as best I could. After that, they were old enough to drive a car and I let the rope out and made suggestions and not determinations. They are still alive, married with a family, and have good paying jobs. And I try not to get into their actions as parents. Not my zoo, their monkey. I wish them luck. In today’s society, they will need it.

Oh, there's plenty of sex going on, but it has become sterile through contraception, homosexuality, and now even through "sex dolls" and "sex robots" that is in reality a form of masturbation. If any conceived children slip through the cracks, they are snuffed out in their mother's wombs before they can take a breath. We live in a selfish and wicked society.

Thank you for your comments. The godless ethos of pagan society toward family runs amok within many American churches. Even in so-called conservative Protestant denominations, the unspoken rule seems to be that artificial birth control is God’s law and design. The intelligence and moral character of parents with “ill-spaced” children are to be held in suspicion. Few encouragements or fellowship invitations await such parents.
“Financial responsibility” is a convenient way to prioritize fleeting monetary comforts over lasting and eternal joys. Am I saying we should not be good stewards, or that more children somehow earns or demonstrates God’s favor? No. But there is great satisfaction to be found in dependence on God’s provisions, and priceless happiness that accompanies children.

I am reminded of this verse often. Didn’t marry at the “right” age. Didn’t do college “right.” Didn’t make all the “right” financial decisions at the “right” times. Wife and I didn’t space our 5 children “right.” Have never had the “right” amount of savings, checking, or investments.
Yet all these years- strangely- not a SINGLE provision has been lacking, without dependence on government or others. “The Earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”
You are correct, it’s not about money. It’s not about choosing money OR children. God can give one, both, or neither. In my opinion, the primary reason the fertility rate is in decline is because pagan society is winning in its natural enmity against family and children, and the church is increasingly acquiescing to the same beliefs.

I l, too, never did right, though I have tried to do what is good. God never called us to a life of ease, though most have forgotten that or never heard of it these days.
The illusion of freedom preached by Satan only enslaves and kills. To separate sex from marriage and procreation from sex is to return to paganism. While the progressives will tout this as progress, the reality will be a return to chattel status for women and children and the celebration of perversion and death.
God is the author of life and marriage. There is no better good then joining together with Him in both matrimony and life. Not all are so blessed, but all who are willing can enjoy true freedom unknown to those seeking selfish pleasures.
