Flake was coached. The D’s were going to walk out of the committee hearing en mass. For a quorum, you need 9, including 2 minority members. The walkout would have prevented a vote and perhaps locked it up for good. A nuclear option. Flake asked for the week. Only Flake could have done this. You should look at Feinstein’s face after the ask. She didn’t expect it. Because Flake did this, the D’s stayed, voted no, and Flake’s vote got the nominee to the floor.

Thank you for the explanation and reframing of Flake's actions. I still think he's ridiculous (in general) and I'm glad he's not going to be in the next Congress, but that makes the FBI request much more palatable.

I'll have to go back and watch the video of the hearing again to see Feinstein's reaction.
