One might propose that her tale grew from an early speculation of her own amongst her circle of tongue-waggers based on the true but slim facts that: (1) she and K happened to attend the same school, perhaps the same classes; (2) in her day she was known to be an admitted to being a person of loose morals; and (3) in later life she her self-promotion put her into a circle with wide high-level contacts and ones strong enough to have her fairytale reviewed by political terror-mongers.
Picture the woman who, some years after school years, followed the progress of some of her classmates, and found at least one to be of superior and broadly-recognized accomplishment. Then suppose at a cocktail party or kaffee-klatsch she asserts a claim to fame as knowing a federal judge, answering a raised eyebrow by hinting "Yeah, I knew him personally, even intimately, back in the day. And knowing me, you know why."
The trouble is that having dug oneself into this belief-hole it just becomes deeper and nastier as she attempts to bolster the claim with more tantalizing imagined detail, rather than backing off and telling her circle, "You know, I was just lying to you. It wasn't real. I didn't know him that well. Our time at school was just a coincidence."
Instead, a shading of one's personal experience tends to become a little bigger lie each time it meets a successful acceptance and thus incorporation into one's charisma.
Well, you can see what happens to a bull-shooter when the tale becomes a part of his/her social essence, and the destruction of it brings an ego-smashing mockery from the credulous audience when they know they've been had. Isn't a cultured psychologist aware of the dangers attending this paradigm of spurious reputation-enhancement?
I'm just guessing, but I think it's possible that her claim to an early-life escapade unexpectedly got away from her into the wrong hands and swept her along like a typhoon. Now it is no longer just a conversational gambit, but a nationally broadcast depraved lie that wrecks lives and reputations when wielded and enlarged like cancer by vile trouble-makers using to for a devilish character-destroying sabotage.
You may suggest to me this might be just an easily contrived explanation, but please don't tell me that it can't be true. Isn't this the way character-assassins work? They hate it when the method is effectively turned back on them, don't they?
Personally, I really think this is what has happened as the result of an expertly manufactured slander campaign.

Ford and Kavanaugh did not attend the same high school—he went to an all-boys Catholic high school and she attended an all-girls (non-Catholic) high school. Kavanaugh said they weren’t in the same social circle but wasn’t sure if they had met. I don’t know if any evidence has been put forward (other than Ford’s allegations—hardly “evidence”) that they knew each other at all in high school. Her friend who was supposedly at the party had never met Kavanaugh.
