I think she wanted Mark Judge to be cross-examined in public in order to smear Kavanaugh (guilt by association). She also wanted the old, white, male semators to do all the questionining. She wants to make it a public circus, but private questioning would make more sense for a case like this.

What makes the most sense was Feinstein doing a private questioning back in July when she got the letter. But that was obviously not the intent all along.
