Alcohol is responsible for more than 5% of all deaths worldwide, or around 3 million a year, new figures have revealed.
The data, part of a report from the World Health Organization, shows that about 2.3 million of those deaths in 2016 were of men, and that almost 29% of all alcohol-caused deaths were down to injuries including traffic accidents and suicide.
The report, which comes out every four years, reveals the continued impact of alcohol on public health around the world, and highlights that the young bear the brunt: 13.5% of deaths among people in their 20s are linked to booze, with alcohol responsible for 7.2% of premature deaths overall.

Islam is a war plan.
If I drink, Ill die.
If I dont driink, Ill die.
We all die.
The headline is misleading. One in twenty deaths are due to mental illness. Alcohol is the symptom, not the cause.
Good point. Cheers!
I don’t buy it.
And they go ahead with legalizing marijuana
We seem these days to attribute anything other than a stellar and straight life to mental illness: crime, poor health choices and outcomes, etc.
I think we’ve taken that explanation way too far—which contributes to our being way over-medicated.
But, theres a war on pain meds.
Except that those maimed or killed by a drunk driver were not necessarily mentally ill.
Yeah yeah... there is a movement in the uK to ban drinking. After all it is turning into a an Islamic nation.
“I think weve taken that explanation way too farwhich contributes to our being way over-medicated.”
I agree. Drinking alcohol is a means of ignoring or treating mental pain. I suspect the pain originates because we find ourselves in a situation that we really don’t like. But, for whatever reason, that situation is not escapable. Yet, our unforgiving subconscious demands that we escape. The tension between the self-driven need to escape and the inability to physically or mentally do so causes pain. Getting buzzed on the cheapest and legally obtainable substance, alcohol, temporarily dulls the pain. Is this menial illness? Maybe not. But it is self-destructive. The shorthand description for this condition is mental illness. As in all generalizations, much is lost by using the shorthand.
“Except that those maimed or killed by a drunk driver were not necessarily mentally ill.”
Western culture is focused on individuals, as opposed to Japanese or Chinese cultures, which are more focused on society. (For an explanation of this, see, “The sociopath next door” by Marth Stout.) Thus, westerners who feel the need to treat their own pain are not attuned to the impact their pain treatment may have on those around them. My experience with alcoholics is they are totally focused on themselves and don’t care what impact they have on others.

Some people drink to forget. I drink to remember.
Why would Roger Daltrey say this?
Better than being murdered by an “Asian male”.
Drinking alcohol is also a harmless and enjoyable thing for probably billions on the planet who don’t abuse it. Not always negative and escapism.
Some apparently are more genetically predisposed to abuse, so there is that too.

Agreed. All things in moderation.
If you eat carrots you will die.
If you don’t eat carrots you will die...
Same with drug addicts. Focused on themselves, not on others.
