“For millennials,” writes the Huffington Post’s Zach Carter, “‘capitalism’ means ‘unaccountable rich people ripping off the world,’ while ‘socialism’ simply means ‘not that.’”

That's actually the most straightforward explanation I've heard. Corporate bad actors give capitalism a bad name, and the public starts grasping for "anything else".

“For millennials,” writes the Huffington Post’s Zach Carter, “‘capitalism’ means ‘unaccountable rich people ripping off the world,’ while ‘socialism’ simply means ‘not that.’” Socialism: noun 1. A political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole. 1.1 Policy or practice based on the political and economic theory of socialism. 1.2 (in Marxist theory) a transitional social state between the overthrow of capitalism and the realization of Communism. Hmmm.

The worst of those ‘corporate bad actors’ are billion dollar marxists who insist that everyone should pay more taxes, live in a smaller footprint home, use public transport, and have the same universal public healthcare service, NONE of which they themselves will submit to.
