I don’t know if I’d call it a mistake.
Mapping the human genome allowed doctors to finally figure out what was wrong with my disabled daughter. Granted, because her disability is genetic, there’s nothing they can do to help her but at least we have a diagnosis.
I’ll give you that if someone with evil intent wanted to create a ‘superbug’ of some sort, the information could be used to do that as well.

A diagnosis and a way to check fetuses in the future so we never have a baby born with that disability ever again.
