They must know they are utter trash because they hate anything/anyone that is better than themselves.

They have always taken the easy way through life because the one thing that creates self-respect is achieving goals that require hard work (in its various forms).

They haven't actually achieved anything that way and the one thing they hate the most because of it is themselves.
