I remember we were only allowed to speak Español, in Spanish class, once we were in high school.
I went to school in California, and back then you took Spanish 6-8 grades. But there was a student from Mexico in my 6th grade class that my teacher assigned to me (back then that’s what they did), so between her and classes I spoke Spanish so well that when I worked around Alpine, Tx some thought I was Mexican. Years later, I taught ESL at a college, but I wasn’t supposed to speak Spanish at all, but sometimes I had to, whatever I could remember at that point. I can still read it fairly well and communicate somewhat, but after years of not having to, I’ve forgotten a lot. But it does come back if I’m forced into a situation.
