McCain and the Forrestal Fire...from 2008
Truth Dig ^ | Oct. 7, 2008 | Mary Hershberger

Ever since, McCain has added compelling details at key points in his political career. When his stories are placed beside documented evidence from other sources, significant contradictions often emerge. One such case involves McCain’s experience in the devastating fire and explosions that killed 134 sailors on the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal during the Vietnam War three months before he was shot down over North Vietnam. McCain has made claims about this accident that differ dramatically from parts of the official Navy report and accounts of reliable eyewitnesses.

Extreme low-info types.

Bad enough, but the guy I exchanged words with last night (elsewhere) called me a liar.

That thread got deleted after I got done.

I'd call that a job well done then.

He was shot down by AAA
Not a SAM
Another “embellishment of fact” for his entire life
Possibly to cover that a AAA shootdown more likely due to recklessness and disregard of training

I’ve seen part of it ( I think) and it is very carefully vanilla flavored and “ nuanced” in the sections that would confirm or deny McCains role in an accidental release of his ordnance onto deck

The missile firing section has a lot of technical jargon but the whole scenario starts out as being “ surmised”

Really? The entire US Navy has to “ surmise” what set this off

These accident reports are very political - cya used to save careers, end careers, and protect certain favored sons

Yep.

When I was in the army one of my buddies drew escort duty and checked out a 45 from supply. Some how he was showing off in the barracks and discharged the pistol hitting another guy, in the leg, in the sergeants quarters. Our captain took care of it, I don't know how but nothing ever happened to the guy and that was an Army Captain, not a General.

Reports say what ever they want them to say.

"The plane carrying the Zuni missile was about as far aft as it could be. They also confirmed that it fired due to an electrical malfunction they didn’t think possible. Safeties had been disconnected and electricity traveled the circuit in a way they didn’t think could happen IIRC."

That's why all they could figure was an unexpected static discharge. The Navy wasn't in CYA mode those days. They could have devised some scientific reason why the Zuni launched.

A few things:
1. The fallacy about McCain firing his missle is BS. It obviously came from an F4 across deck.
2. I've seen that video in basic back in 1975 and many times since.
3. I don't think the Navy still knows which aircraft dropped the bombs onto the burning fuel from the Zuni hit.
4. It's been proven those bombs were obsolete and just asking to light off.
5. I don't believe the AO's (red shirts) were responsible in mis-handling the missle.

The part of that video that is forever embedded into my mind, was that heroic hapless CPO running towards the infernal with only a hand-held PKP canister. The first bomb lights off and he is vaporized. Wonder if they ever found any parts. DNA was not available at the time.

Although there were many heroic efforts by the crew to save their shipmates and their ship, he was the first from what I can tell. I saw no movement of a Crash crew nor any activity of the trained flight deck personnel. No one ever mentions his name in these threads.

Last thought: When I mentioned Navy CYA above, I have yet to see the official reports of the Ferguson and McCain collisions with slow-moving freighters. Haven't followed the McCain incident, but the Ferguson has stories about a pissing contest between the female OOD and the commander of CIC. Can you guide me to the most reliable sources? Sorry, don't want to Google - too many sites to research.

I called it back in the late 70's when women were only assigned to oilers/supply ships. I saw it in line when crossing a tender in line for liberty in Diego Garcia. Some poor sap quietly mentioned what a nice ass and immediately got pulled aside from some female CPO. Of course, then you have the Tailhook scandal because some poor wittle girls didn't like getting slapped on the bottom just like the guys. Many good careers were ruined by that PC nonsense.

Women should NOT be on combat ships nor any combat role in the Armed Services. Their hormone fluctuations are problematic, yet here we are.

I certainly agree with everything you’re saying about the Forrestal fire and have argued the same points many times in the past. Although probably never again.

As for the ship collisions you’re asking about I’m afraid I never followed those stories at all so I can’t help with any info about them.

Yes, it's useless to argue against the McCain conspiracy. The video shows what happened that was supported by the Navy investigation. That was before the Pentagon was in CYA mode and we could trust the military to be truthful. Can't believe your lying eyes? Har.

As for the Ferguson and McCain, from what I've read, it was due to lack of discipline and poor training. I was glad to see the Skippers fired and the Pacific Fleet Admiral, IIRC. But what happened to the Officers who actually let those collisions happen?
