Just look at Robert Gates, the worst SecDef in 50 years. Only McNamara was worse. This guy was such a loser as an Air Force 2nd Lieutenant (O-1) that he couldn’t make 1st Lieutenant (O-2). He was in for 3 years, promotion to O-2 is usually automatic at 18 months. It’s like going from E-2 to E-3. He was separated (soft kick-out) after 3 years. Any current or former officer that I mention this to goes, “Damn!”
Why do I mention Gates? After being fired by the Air Force, he fell ass-backwards into the CIA, rose up through the ranks, and eventually became director of that agency. So yes, I’m not to impressed with who they’re hiring and mentoring.
