“merit” implies paying a price and demanding a good in return. “Invite” means ask for a good while not deserving it.

LOL! More weasel words! If you have a problem with the use of the word "merit", take it up with your magisterium. Ask them to change what they declared at Trent.

“merit” is indeed used in two senses: (1) something for which a reward is owed and (2) something that is truly good in itself.
