A major protest is reportedly scheduled to take place on Sept. 22 at President Trumps Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida to mark the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria.
According to CBS News, the Latino Victory Project (LVP) and Power 4 Puerto Rico (P4P) are launching a seven-figure campaign to register displaced Puerto Rican voters ahead of midterm elections. They are also organizing major demonstrations at the presidents Florida estate and at Trump Tower in New York as part of the initiative.
After Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico last year, the Trump administration faced immense criticism for its handling of recovery efforts on the island as well as the accounting of the deaths, though the president himself and administration officials have defended their actions.
Last week, the Puerto Rican government acknowledged that more than 1,400 people likely died on the island due to Hurricane Maria, roughly 20 times the previous official estimate.
LVP, a liberal group that helps support Latino Democratic political candidates, is reportedly planning to devote at least $1.5 million to mobilize displaced Puerto Ricans residing in Florida and in other states.
LVP board chairman Luis Miranda said in a statement to the news outlet that the "gross negligence" of the Trump administrations response to hurricanes that devastated Puerto Rico last year "must never be repeated."
"By raising awareness of the crisis and empowering our community we can begin to repair the damage that has been done to my beloved Puerto Rico," he continued.
Melissa Mark-Viverito, director of P4P, which has worked to bring more awareness to the islands slow recovery after last years hurricanes, told the publication that the protest at the presidents Florida estate and the march on Trump Tower are all part of her efforts to bring more attention to the islands ongoing recovery.
"We have a fiscal crisis that exists compounded by the emergency of the hurricane," she told the outlet.
"People don't have jobs to go back to, people don't' have homes that have been rebuilt properly and there are families that continue to be displaced because of medical issues, Mark-Viverito continued. Events leading up to the one-year anniversary are really going to highlight the reality that Puerto Rico is living."
Mark-Viverito said her group also plans to have activists based in Washington D.C. meet with lawmakers in efforts to increase federal assistance to her native island.
Where exactly are they going to protest at Mar-a-Lago? The Google Street scene doesn’t show much room on either side of the street in front of the resort.
Many of them still believe Hurricane Katrina happened because Bush "steered" the storm into New Orleans to kill black people.
Meanwhile Planned Parenthood continues to exterminate minorities at astounding rates as it’s founding mission lives on. Black leaders continue to demand we fund it.
Isn’t Mar-a-Lago normally closed in September? It’s still too hot.
Their next Protest will be to Protest to find out why their Protests are going nowhere
Wow, they look a lot alike. If you can get past the black masks.
I guess its not only the poor who will always be with us....its the anarchists too.
Nuke Puerto Rico from orbit....
I’m all for Puerto Rican independence.
Without any ties to the US.
Complete severance.
As in today.
Hasta la vista, pendejos.
wonder who’s paying them to protest this time?
Nobody uses 60s anymore.
It’s the Katrina “crisis” playbook.
protests, never thought of that....
When the ballplayer Arod (Alex Rodriguez) was heading into the courthouse on his illegal performance drug charges he had hired dozens of actors to be in the front lines of the crowd to slap his high fiving hands as he went by to their cheering encouragement and smiles caught on camera nationally.
Why don’t they use their energy to go rebuild the island?
They didn't get it to stick to Trump when it happened so this is their re-do.
Trump should release the hounds.
Mr. Burns style.
“We have a fiscal crisis that exists compounded by the emergency of the hurricane.”
Because Trump, you know, caused, like, both of those, and he didn’t do anything about them, or even care, man.
I concur.
Why some people wish for Puerto Rico to become a State is beyond me.
PR is a liability, not an asset. Cut them loose.
That little treasonous, racist rat Luis Gutierrez is Puerto Rican. Thats enough reason right there.
Losers without jobs got to left wing protests.
These kooks will not move the needle. Even with the Palm Beach and Miami media sucking up to them.
