Failed business leaves Israel with a crocodile conundrum
CBS News ^ | 8-9-18

PETZAEL, West Bank -- An Israeli businessman appears to have bitten off more than he can chew with plans for a crocodile farm in a West Bank settlement. Hundreds of crocodiles have been stranded at the farm in a remote spot in the Jordan Valley -- left behind by a pair of failed business ventures.

The crocodiles were brought to the settlement of Petzael in the mid-1990s as a tourist attraction. Ensuing Israeli-Palestinian violence kept visitors away, prompting the crocodiles' purchase by entrepreneur Gadi Biton, who hoped to sell them for their skin.

But his venture flopped after Israel passed a law in 2012 defining the crocodile as a protected animal, and banning raising the animals for sale as meat or merchandise. Multiple attempts to sell them abroad have failed.

"We found ourselves with hundreds of crocodiles in this farm that no one knows what to do with," said David Elhayani, head of the Jordan Valley Regional Council. A lone worker feeds the animals dead chickens once every eight days.

Dozens of the crocodiles lazed recently on the sun-baked shores of a lagoon on the property, their jaws ajar, revealing menacing teeth.

The animals have become a pain for the owner, the region and Israel. Dozens of crocodiles have escaped on two occasions, including once when 70 flew the coop only to be found after a three-day croc-hunt. The reptiles, which can live well into their 70s, are also reproducing. Their numbers are expected to grow to the thousands in the coming years.

Yes.

“According to Icelandic name tradition, Icelandic surnames end in -son or -dóttir with few exceptions. Some family names do exist in Iceland, most commonly adaptations from last name patronyms Icelanders took up when living abroad, usually Denmark.”

I was thinking Iceland, as well. But several of the Scandinavian countries use the patrinomic for the children. Which is why finding their genealogical records is so difficult for genealogists.

Sometimes, a family will keep their own genealogy, which makes all things easier, but usually it was the “landed gentry” that felt they were important enough to be remembered.

I’m glad they’re taking care of the rodent population in Iceland.

It was the spelling, -dottir. Other Scandinavian countries are more likely to use -dottar.

It is cooler here this morning. I may have to wear a jacket when I go to Walmart, after it gets light.

Interesting item below explains why I never encountered any Swedes or Danes with -dotter patronyms during my visit there...

Very informative. We have a family from Sweden in my neighborhood. Brigitta, who is about 60 and very fit, lives in one house, and her daughter and son-in-law live up the street.

Yes, the spelling was The Clue, so I just added my 2¢ worth from my genealogical store of Useless Information.

I haven’t had to break out the heavy jacket yet, but I did drag out the Arkansas Razorbacks jacket that I bought a very long time ago. I couldn’t afford it, but I always try to buy something in support of the college teams in AR. I wasn’t going to use it, but I decided when it gets to the point that I really want to retire it, I’ll make a pillow out of it.

The bed is made, steroid has been had and I think I’m ready psychologically for the trip in to get the prescription. I hope so, anyway.

I agree: all hippos should be free. Just not in my neighborhood, please.

It’s much cooler here today, at least. Vlad and I are leaving soon on a trip to the reptile vet: Baby has mold.

Oh no! Poor baby! Is that a difficult thing to treat?

My youngest grandson just got his beardie last week. The name it’s been dubbed with is “Thog.” Or did I already say this...?

The trip into Vegas was uneventful. When I first began going to the pain clinic, prescriptions could not be picked up before 0800. Since the whole medical center moved west and south, they can be picked up at 0700. I didn’t know that until this morning, so it’s going to streamline my trips in to get a prescription.

I found a couple of pairs of heavyweight pants, both under $10, but they will have to wait. There are also new Henley thermal shirts (ladies) and some new flannel shirts with embroidery on the yoke. Something else to want. (My winter clothes are rather scarce, which makes it hard to dress in layers.) :o[

There is a chilly wind today, but the ride to town, I had to use the heater, and the way home, I was facing the sun so I got sweaty. Then I got out at Walgreen’s and thought I’d freeze! Welcome to Fall in Vegas!

It’s not a convenient time to be Entirely Surrounded by Water.

That's what Eeyore said.

I didn’t hear about the grandson’s dragon. Thog is a cute name! The treatment for mold is iodine. The worst thing for Baby will be that we have to keep her cage extra clean, so we had to replace her sand and rocks with papers. She’ll get bored!

...She’ll get bored!

Especially with no males nearby!

This dragon purchase is something my grandson has been researching for quite some time, and I don't know if his dad (NOT my son) vetoed the idea of keeping it at his home, or if Sam just thought his Mom and step-dad would be less of a stress to deal with it. So the beardie is safely ensconsed a few blocks from the dad. (Who doesn't seem to like much of anything his son does.)

I'm in a lot more pain than I should be for this day, as the drive in and back isn't much more than a straight line, and if I time it right, the lights are with me. It just seems that I shouldn't feel quite so bad.
