PETZAEL, West Bank -- An Israeli businessman appears to have bitten off more than he can chew with plans for a crocodile farm in a West Bank settlement. Hundreds of crocodiles have been stranded at the farm in a remote spot in the Jordan Valley -- left behind by a pair of failed business ventures.
The crocodiles were brought to the settlement of Petzael in the mid-1990s as a tourist attraction. Ensuing Israeli-Palestinian violence kept visitors away, prompting the crocodiles' purchase by entrepreneur Gadi Biton, who hoped to sell them for their skin.
But his venture flopped after Israel passed a law in 2012 defining the crocodile as a protected animal, and banning raising the animals for sale as meat or merchandise. Multiple attempts to sell them abroad have failed.
"We found ourselves with hundreds of crocodiles in this farm that no one knows what to do with," said David Elhayani, head of the Jordan Valley Regional Council. A lone worker feeds the animals dead chickens once every eight days.
Dozens of the crocodiles lazed recently on the sun-baked shores of a lagoon on the property, their jaws ajar, revealing menacing teeth.
The animals have become a pain for the owner, the region and Israel. Dozens of crocodiles have escaped on two occasions, including once when 70 flew the coop only to be found after a three-day croc-hunt. The reptiles, which can live well into their 70s, are also reproducing. Their numbers are expected to grow to the thousands in the coming years.

They’re stocking winter clothes. I got jackets for some of the Offspring earlier this week.
Thanks. I’ll check tomorrow on my way out of town. I really don’t like that drive, but I have to do it. However, I’m thinking, when my 3-month follow-up comes up in November, I’ll see about a change in the dosage since I only take it twice a day.
I’ll get a little something pink, too, along with looking at the price tags for pants.
Sounds like a plan. It’s still raining here, but Jake went outside anyway. He’ll come back when he’s all wet and sit on the newspaper.
Oh. And I called Chuck. He evidently changed his outgoing message, as a few words were added. I asked him to call me when he had time, so I’ll be sure to take my phone with me when I go out this morning, just in case!
I hope he has cheerful news!
And Jake will sit and drip on the paper to show his displeasure with you for allowing him to get wet when you KNOW he has to make his rounds, so stop the rain a’ready!
If Jake isn’t happy, it’s my fault. That’s just a default.
If nothing else, I’ll be moved up solely by attrition. Maybe Monday I can assemble the two applications that need the manager’s signature and get them sent off.
Sitting and waiting is very difficult for me, though the new changes in the Church schedules will make it easier for me to go and stay for all (two, now!) meetings on Sundays. That will make me feel better overall.
I also have to get my chips together and get things going on the changeover from this laptop to the HP. I had to back away from it for a bit. I suspect it will be a most welcome change from MS.
How is that different from any existing college freshman?
Twice today I’ve come to the dreaded realization that it’s not yet Friday, as I was thinking it was.
Maybe the cosmos is telling me to go back to bed until tomorrow.
Oh, well. Happy Friday Eve to all.
Happy Friday Eve to you, ArGee! Hang in there!
Heh. I see that you have had a day comparable to my average day in the snakepit. I pray for you. I know you’ll keep the faith. (Have no idea if y’all will receive this since in place w/spotty wifi.)
Dang its tooo late google knows .... sigh
Evening, all. We had some high wind and about 6” of rain. Now the sun is shining. The grill blew over and busted.
I have a meeting this evening, so off I go again!
What pretty kittehs!
It’s Friday. I’m ready to take a shower but the bathroom has to warm up first!
Six inches of rain??? In an afternoon??? Holy cloudburst, Tax-chick!
Six very wet reasons for me not to live in the South! I like my High Desert!
Yes, 6” in a day. Fortunately, the runoff didn’t back up around here. It’s not a convenient time to be Entirely Surrounded by Water.
LOL!
