The New York Times has devoted an entire edition of its magazine, some 30,000 words, to a terrifying piece about climate change. With 2C warming an unlikely best-case scenario at this point, scientists were quoted as saying the planet faces long-term disaster.
I was having lunch with friends in Brooklyn on Sunday, in a low-lying area that will be under water when all of this comes to pass and, political analysis aside, all we could focus on was: what on earth are we going to do? More specifically, how to ensure the survival of our children, and should it involve buying a compound in some remote part of Canada?
The difficulty is knowing how to recognise the klaxon call when it comes. Is this, the summer of forest fires and record heatwaves, the climate disaster equivalent to Kristallnacht? Or can we safely not think about it for another 10 years?
No one had any answers. One friend averred that, shabby as this line of thinking is, one had to assume that when climate change posed an imminent threat to national security, the entire US defence budget would be ploughed into technology to reverse it, and we would be saved in the nick of time.
Meanwhile, the property investment implications of climate change seem, obscurely, to be part of how we got here in the first place. Peter Thiel and his fellow billionaires are, of course, developing survival strategies that include the creation of manmade archipelagos in international waters. Whenever I feel lassitude about long-term planning, I picture the future of humanity in the form of Thiel, smug on his island, and am almost but not quite irritated into action.

I wish I could apologize to you conservative Canadians for dimwits like these who threaten to invade your country, but I admit that getting them out of ours serves our own interests!
Besides, none of those dimwits ever leave here anyway. They are all talk.
What they are looking for was previously called “The final solution”.
She’s pretty old to be hanging out in Brooklyn! (White sections only, of course).
The Canadians are lucky. As the warm zone creeps northward, they can at least migrate north. (If anyone took their claims seriously anyway)
I am going to head over and read some of those...my browser will be soiled, but I suppose I can clean it.
As the illegal alien inundation sets in, I’m considering escaping to .......... I’m not telling.
Actually, these folks ought to go and spend 12 months up in Yellowknife. I think after one winter....they will agree that maybe things aren’t that bad in the US.
Good God. It is like reading YouTube comments...which I stopped doing forever minutes after I started actually reading them for the first time.
Yup. Seriously cold. As in: parking lots have outlets to plug in engine block heaters so cars can start.
Bye...I know you won’t move...just like the others who threatened to leave.
SCARING STUPID PEOPLE ABOUT FAKE CLIMATE CAUSED DISASTERS FOR FUN AND MONEY
“...there has been some discussion in the US media as to whether it downplayed the villainy of the fossil fuels industry and previous Republican administrations.”
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gasps for breath.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Im thinking about escape to Canada”...
So you think Canada’s climate is different than the climate in the U.S.?
Go back to school, you missed a lot!
Is that directed at me? Or the Guardian writer?
Thanks for this! Why does no Guardian writer ever remember this little fib?
What are you and every living organism made of??? Quick answer: Carbon Dioxide!
What else do you and every living organism require to exist???
Oxygen!
Where does the oxygen come from? When growing organisms digest the carbon dioxide they emit oxygen.
SO if the cycle of life requires oxygen then it is surely a great thing that there is plenty of CO2!
Could it be more obvious? These people are helpless fools!
The problem is people like this NEVER move to Canada. Instead they move to places like Vermont, upstate NY, New Hampshire, Idaho, Montana, etc. Then they spew their liberal BS in towns like the one I LIVE IN. This is what made Vermont into a liberal state(ex NYS liberals). It is currently changing my NH. A former conservative state.
Idaho, Nevada, AZ, Utah, Montana are all experiencing a huge influx of people moving from California. I was in Boise and Coeur d’Alene. Everyone moving there was coming from California. It will slowly change these lowers population states purple just like it did here in NH.
Carry arse please......
Why do the states of New York and California think they are the center of the universe?
