But you knew that.

by Associated Press
Just 6 percent of people say they have a lot of confidence in the media, putting the news industry about equal to Congress and well below the publics view of other institutions. In this presidential campaign year, Democrats were more likely to trust the news media than Republicans or independents
The poll shows that accuracy clearly is the most important component of trust
Nearly 90 percent of Americans say its extremely or very important that the media get their facts correct, according to the study

18 Apr 2016: HuffPo: Hardly Anyone Trusts The Media Anymore
People value accuracy, timeliness and clarity above all else.
By Nick Visser
Only 6 percent of people say they have a great deal of confidence in the press, about the same level of trust Americans have in Congress, according to a new survey released on Sunday.
The study mirrors past reports that found the publics trust in mass media has reached historic lows, according to data gathered by the Media Insight Project, a partnership between The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the American Press Institute. The report found faith in the press was just slightly higher than the 4 percent of people who said they trusted Congress
Over the last two decades, research shows the public has grown increasingly skeptical of the news industry, the report reads. The study reaffirms that consumers do value broad concepts of trust like fairness, balance, accuracy, and completeness. At least two-thirds of Americans cite each of these four general principles as very important to them.

The poll of 2,014 adults was conducted ***Feb. 18-March 21 with funding from the American Press Institute. It used a sample drawn from NORCs probability-based AmeriSpeak panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 2.9 percentage points
Respondents were first selected randomly using address-based sampling methods, and later interviewed online or by phone.
