Indeed they are needed TODAY...But in 10+ years, self driving trucks/cars will eliminate the need for drivers. Much like buggy whip manufactures, elevator operators, and switchboard operators their jobs are going to disappear.

When I suddenly found myself out of a job due to a dishonest and corrupt PC which took over my former company, I was all set to go to truck driving school because my unemployment pat was due to run out. I got my first bonafide interview the month Trump was elected and a job just a month after that.
I'm now making much more than I did with the crooked company, but I remember the truck driving schools I interviewed with telling me that they welcomed older drivers not only because they drove more responsibly, but because most of them would retire once self-driving trucks came on line.

Yeah and when each and every trucking company has a "self-driving" truck kill some people....Those companies..will be toast...
I will NEVER get in a "self-driving" vehicle...Ain't gonna happen.
Oh...before you say...well there are planes with auto-pilot!! Of course...I am very well aware of that.....BUT...there is a pilot right there...and maybe two...watching what is happening..
I'd rather ride my horse...than get in a "self-driving" anything...on the road.
