Washington, D.C. U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement today on President Trumps meeting and press conference with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki:
Todays press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory. The damage inflicted by President Trumps naiveté, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is difficult to calculate. But it is clear that the summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake.
President Trump proved not only unable, but unwilling to stand up to Putin. He and Putin seemed to be speaking from the same script as the president made a conscious choice to defend a tyrant against the fair questions of a free press, and to grant Putin an uncontested platform to spew propaganda and lies to the world.
It is tempting to describe the press conference as a pathetic rout as an illustration of the perils of under-preparation and inexperience. But these were not the errant tweets of a novice politician. These were the deliberate choices of a president who seems determined to realize his delusions of a warm relationship with Putins regime without any regard for the true nature of his rule, his violent disregard for the sovereignty of his neighbors, his complicity in the slaughter of the Syrian people, his violation of international treaties, and his assault on democratic institutions throughout the world.
Coming close on the heels of President Trumps bombastic and erratic conduct towards our closest friends and allies in Brussels and Britain, todays press conference marks a recent low point in the history of the American Presidency. That the president was attended in Helsinki by a team of competent and patriotic advisors makes his blunders and capitulations all the more painful and inexplicable.
No prior president has ever abased himself more abjectly before a tyrant. Not only did President Trump fail to speak the truth about an adversary; but speaking for America to the world, our president failed to defend all that makes us who we area republic of free people dedicated to the cause of liberty at home and abroad. American presidents must be the champions of that cause if it is to succeed. Americans are waiting and hoping for President Trump to embrace that sacred responsibility. One can only hope they are not waiting totally in vain.
Sounds like McCain’s name is on Putin’s $400 Million list?
in a fire
It’s time for SEN. MITCH MCCONNELL to pay a visit to the ailing MCCAIN to ascertain if he in fact is issuing these press statements.
Too funny. I was thinking the same thing.
BOOM
Did not Trump just tell Merkle and the EU that a Russian pipeline was a bad idea? I am sure Putin did not like that.
Wasnt he retiring on July 4th?
This is rich coming from a guy who seems to have been taking his orders from the Communist Party via the DNC his entire career, including Hanoi. Note that mccain didn’t release this statement until well after democrats and DNC media made their pronouncements, further evidence that he marches to their tune.
Stand up to enemy? McCain is the wuss who hugged his communist torturer when the former NVA creep visited the US and the Senate.
Sort of the opposite of "The dog didn't bark."
Dear globalist shyt heads,
We simply are fatigued beyond belief with the Russia Russia Russia stuff. Thus, your outrage today is greeted with more than a modicum of “who cares.”
We don’t care. As a matter of fact, I care so little that I am not even going to begin to go through the loooooong list of how, over the years, you folks in the globalist cabal and on the left actively aided and abetter Russia.
Have a nice day of eating poop and, I mean you Mr. McCain, dying.
Love and kisses,
FlipWilson
Hmm, reads a lot like the Democrat statements...
As far as I’m concerned McCain gave up his right to comment when he went home to Arizona and did not return to DC. Resign.
Wasnt he retiring on July 4th?
It’s hard to say anything when you’re in a Coma
Maybe he should’ve bowed and kissed rings instead.
If only he’d campaigned as hard for himself as he did for his ostensible opponent....
McCain is a Traitor from his Vietnam collaboration, and add a second count from his face to face dealings with known mid-east terrorists.
I DON’T TAKE TO NATIONAL SECURITY PRONOUNCEMENTS FROM TWO-TIME TRAITORS.
It’s a total a****** statement, type of thing he would say.
Who writes McCain’s stuff for him?
If he is as ill as claimed, how does he get these opinions out in such a short time?
