Politics in Utah are completely different from those in Arizona. Hatch had to take conservative positions most of the time. Willard will be expected to do the same.
If he doesn't, there are not enough crossover Democrats who can save him in the next primary from the fate of the very forgettable soft conservative who was beaten in a primary by Mike Lee. I'm disappointed that Dr. Kennedy could not win the primary against slick Willard, but I guess the gratitude for his saving the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics + the Trump endorsement + the Romney money + the tribal pride from his presence atop the 2012 ticket was just to much to overcome.
He will be 77 when he finishes his first term in the U.S. Senate anyway. I have my doubts that he will even want to run for re-election.
