They sure did, and many that I know did not get the retirement they expected, or the benefits. They thought they were in tall cotton for the rest of their lives. It did not work out that way for many.
Thing is they did buy it hook, line, and sinker just as you said.
I think that most of the WWII generation DID collect on their union benefit pensions————later generations,not so much.
