He is making over $170K. His pension will be about two-thirds of that.

while at the same time very few NATO members spend the required 2% of their GDPs on defense

NATO burden sharing has been a topic that’s been around since the 1960’s. Decades of endless rhetoric, promises, and posturing. Talk produced nothing, as usual.

Trump is finally doing something about it.

“He grew up in a different era and I’d bet hasn’t progressed with technology. 33 years ago most in the state department could just pick up a phone and talk to their peer anywhere in the world...”

I think it was Margaret Thatcher who made this observation:
you can trace the decline in the British Empire to the use of the telephone.

This officer had plum assignments. He is a lawyer and probably has a job alredy lined up:

Prior to [Estonia], he served as Minister-Counselor for Management Affairs at Embassy London from 2008 to 2010 and at Embassy Moscow from 2005 to 2008. In Moscow, London and particularly in Berlin, Ambassador Melville frequently served as Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Ambassador Melville’s first Foreign Service assignment was in the U.S. Embassy to the German Democratic Republic from 1986-1988. He has also served in Seychelles, St. Petersburg, at the U.S. Mission to NATO, and in Paris. In Washington, he has worked in Legislative Affairs, as a Senior Watch Officer in the Operations Center, and at the Foreign Service Board of Examiners. Mr. Melville speaks Russian, German, and French. He graduated from Boston University with an honors degree in history, has a J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law, and is a member of the bars of New Jersey and New York. He is originally from Bradley Beach, New Jersey and is married to Joanna Melville.

For far too long the State Department has been the province of Eastern Ivy League Leftists. They are not representing Main Street.

Absolutely true. As they might say, its a coterie.

All that lofty education and he can’t see the obvious self-serving manipulation of the U.S by its so-called “allies”. Good riddance to him. We need diplomats who have common sense and expect some semblance of fairness and reciprocity in our agreements and partnerships.

We will no longer be a door mat for other countries to walk over. Trump is absolutely right that we have been the”piggy bank that everybody’s robbing.” Diplomats who focus on their pet causes and who want to champion the interests of other countries at the expense of the U.S. need to resign or retire.

So he basically made a career of sightseeing on tax payer dime and now it’s time to retire and figures he’ll stir the pot with some comments and see what other easy money he can make from that.

I didn't know how true that was until I aced their test and got invited to Foggy Bottom for an interview. In looking over the resumes of those who would be on the interview team (both group and individual), I spied a number of commonalities-- same group of universities, all with past experience in media or the Peace Corps, lots of diversity in appearance but almost none in thought.

Somehow, they detected that I was probably a conservative (all that experience in the private sector may have tipped them off) and I was among the first group dismissed. Funny, we all seemed to have commonalities as well-- married men, military and/or private sector experience, mostly, and colleges more than 200 miles from the Boswash corridor.

He is not “resigning”. He is retiring, and wants to make a splash with his Progressive buddies while doing it.

He gets a fat pension.

If you resign, you do not retire.

Precisely! Just more cost-free virtual signaling.
