Maybe. Did you listen to the teacher instead of studying the war?

A civil war is a war between two factions inside a country who are fighting to gain control of the government of the nation.

A war for independence is one where a part of a nation declares that it intends to separate from the other and create its own government. It does not seek to overthrow or change the nation it left. (See the Declaration of Independence for a good example that your teachers DID talk about).

The Confederate States were the latter.
