Mike Lee is a never Trump operative who did everything possible to sabotage the Trump campaign and help get Hillary Clinton elected.

He should never be appointed to SCOTUS.
Flake blocking the nomination is a real threat.
However, didn’t the GOP remove conservatives from committee positions under Boehner? The republicans can do the same to Flake and put somebody else in his place if he tries to block it. Can’t they?
It needs to be someone who will overturn all pro-abortion decisions and uphold all pro-life decisions.
Flake ranks about #8 in the Judiciary Committee Majority. He can’t obstruct anything. He’s lobbying for a job being interviewed by Chris Matthews.
Chairman Grassley knows how to get nominations to the Senate floor even if his own committee rebels.

If Mike Lee was nominated, he could resign from the Senate and the Republican governor of Utah could immediately appoint a replacement. So it wouldn’t impact the voting lineup. But Mike Lee is too partisan a choice, with too many positions which are open to attack.
My guess is that President Trump will nominate a woman, for political reasons. Sykes is too old, so she’s out. My money is on Amy Barrett, who just ran the confirmation gauntlet after being attacked for her Catholic religious views. A re-run of that fight would alienate a lot of Catholics from the Democratic Party, and would let Republicans take the high ground of the Constitution’s “no religious test”. And the three Democrats who just voted to confirm her to the 7th Circuit Court would have a really tough time saying she was qualified for that but not the Supreme Court.
If he blocks a nominee on the executive calendar just to force a vote on an unrelated bill, as he threatened to do with judicial nominees before Kennedy retired, then that would seem to be a good reason for the party to remove him from the committee.
Outside the committee, I think he loses any ability to block the nomination. He would need one more Republican and no Democrat defections, but I think Manchin and at least one or two other Democrats will vote to confirm, depending on who the nominee is.

It won’t be a woman; there are three on the court already. It’ll be a man, probably from the South, probably the Fifth Circuit, Sixth Circuit, or Eighth Circuit since those are the most conservative, and in his late thirties or early forties.
