CNN) - The unarmed 17-year-old who was shot and killed by police in East Pittsburgh earlier this week died of a gunshot wound to the "trunk," the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said Friday.
The manner of Antwon Rose's death was listed as homicide.
The medical examiner's brief report did not specify in what side of the "trunk" Antwon was shot. Witnesses said the African-American teen was fleeing police when he was struck by bullets.
The officer who fired the fatal shots was identified by Allegheny County officials on Thursday as Michael Rosfeld, according to an email from the county's director of communications, Amie Downs. CNN has attempted to reach Rosfeld numerous times, but has not been successful.
The officer -- who had just been sworn in on the East Pittsburgh police force a few hours before the shooting -- has been placed on administrative leave, police said. He had worked with other local departments for seven years, CNN affiliate WPXI reported.
Allegheny County Police Superintendent Coleman McDonough said on Wednesday that the officer had not been interviewed.
Asked if the officer is white, McDonough said, "I don't understand what that has to do with the situation."

Antwon, who lived in nearby Rankin, had been a passenger in a car that was stopped by police Tuesday evening because it matched the description of a car that was involved in an earlier shooting, Allegheny County police said.
The officer ordered the driver out of the car and onto the ground, police said. Antwon and another passenger "bolted" from the vehicle, and the East Pittsburgh officer opened fire, striking Antwon, Allegheny County police said.
The 20-year-old driver of the vehicle was later released, police said. Authorities are still searching for the other passenger.

Deaths like this are always ruled homicide. The question is not whether shooting a fleeing, unarmed suspect three times in the back will be ruled justified, only when.
This is the only one where people are out there supporting the killer.
Well, I live in Pa, and if you are running from a cop the cause of death is ‘suicide’.

Some dictionaries restrict it to “unlawful” killing, whereas others define it as any killing of one person by another — whether or not criminal.
In other words, the “authorities” don’t agree.
Still, I agree with the other posters who say the headline wrongly tries to accuse the officer of murder.
I am not a left wing troll. I tried to add something moderate but I have plenty to say about anti-cop mobs, Maxine Waters, and much more. That will probably be my last moderate comment.
Usually fellow FReepers attack me as too extreme (I make no exceptions for any Dems and this causes people to try to express their own compassion for a friend, loved one or acquaintance and say maybe that was one of the good Dems. Al Sharpton wore a tailor made expensive dress suit and silk tie as he incited a black mob in 1992 to “go get the Jews!” for an accident in urban Crown Heights traffic that killed a black teen. One in the mob took him up on it and murdered at random a young rabbinical student in cold blood. The incitement to riot and murder did not put Sharpton in prison. He has a TV show now on MSNBC.
Whether the mob is pulling Reginald Denny from his truck to beat him mercilessly, torturing Channon Christian or shooting Amanda Blackburn and turning her around “to watch the woman bleed” the clothes they wear does not matter. A dozen of these stories a week get buried on purpose except for local TV news segments.
I am sorry to all for posting a moderate story. We must stand together on common ground.
