WASHINGTON (Reuters) - North Korea could start the process of handing over the remains of troops, including Americans, missing from the Korean War within the next few days, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Tuesday.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said North Korea would hand over the remains to United Nations Command in South Korea, and they would then be transferred to Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii.
One official said a sizable number of remains were expected to be handed over, but declined to give a specific number given the unpredictability of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
It could take months or even years before the remains are positively identified, the officials added.
U.S. President Donald Trump met with Kim at a historic summit last week in Singapore.
In a news conference following the summit, Trump said North Korea had agreed to return the remains of U.S. soldiers.
(The families) want the remains of their fathers, and mothers, and all of the people that got caught into that really brutal war, Trump said.
And (Kim) agreed to that so quickly and so nice - it was really a very nice thing, and he understands it, Trump added.

If they are cremated, how are you going to know it is really them? There isn’t going to be a DNA test for verification.
Side note: you a fan of Shoeonhead (YouTube), too?
Just gave a speech today to local Rotary Club about hometown heroes who never came home or came home in body bags starting from WWI forward. Earliest KIA in Korea was Sep 1950 and body never recovered. Told the group there’s a chance for closure on this one.
When will USA start doing something to reciprocate? And what will it be? This is very fragile right now and at some point we need to show good faith on the part of the US. Gloating is the worse thing we can do. The NORKs are reading everything that is being printed on the subject. We need to be putting a team together to go in and provide substantial support across the whole front, telecommunications, medical, financial, etc., with keeping NORKs in the forefront of each of those efforts.
“When will USA start doing something to reciprocate? And what will it be?”
Given the North Koreans, I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t already have something in mind.
