A few years ago one of my daughters was struggling with how to figure the area of various shapes. I looked at her textbook and realized it didn't have the formulas. So, I printed them from the Internet and showed her how they worked. She didn't believe me it could be that simple.

Having some spunk which I like to think she got from the old man, she confronted her teacher and asked if this was true. When he sheepishly admitted it was, she said he had lied to her!

Gutsy move! Sadly we can’t win that way, though.

Amazingly some math teachers think that the kids should figure out the formulas for themselves. That's nonsensical. None of the teachers would accept a college course in math, or physics, or chemistry or even computer science where the professor said "figure it out for yourself."
