European conservative movements can be a catch-22.
Merkel's replacement may be anti-Merkel and anti-EU - but he or she may *also* be anti-American and anti-Trump, as many in the European right wing are. They resent America's postwar rise and leading economic role. And this goes for most Germans on either side of the political spectrum.
And forgot to add anti-Semitic in addition to anti-American. Some right wingers there are anti-Christian too and hyper-secular. They see all religions as problems not just Islam.
So yeah, if Merkel leaves -- great! But I won't be optimistic till I know who her replacement is. We'll see whether Germans have truly learned their lessons from history.
