Ryan says Trump backs compromise immigration plan

President Donald Trump backs compromise immigration legislation that House Republican leaders are trying to craft in hopes of ending the party’s standoff over the issue, Speaker Paul Ryan told GOP lawmakers Wednesday. Details of the measure remained in negotiation between conservatives and moderates, and whatever emerges faces an uphill climb.

Ryan, R-Wis., described Trump’s support to fellow Republicans at a closed-door meeting Wednesday, lawmakers said. The president’s backing would bolster the chances that the package could pass the House over likely solid Democratic opposition, but enough Republicans could still defect to sink it.

Ryan addressed his colleagues a day after planning two votes next week on a pair of competing GOP immigration measures, one by conservatives and the other a still-evolving plan that leaders hope will appeal to both ends of the party’s spectrum.

Ryan told lawmakers that he spoke to Trump on Tuesday and “the president seemed very supportive” of the compromise bill that’s being drafted, Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y., told reporters. That was echoed by Rep. Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., who said, “I know the president, according to Paul today, supports it.”

The conservative bill would offer limited opportunities for young “Dreamer” immigrants to stay in the country legally and include tough border security measures, but it is widely expected to be defeated by a combination of Democrats and moderate Republicans. An alternative that leaders are still crafting would offer those immigrants a potential pathway to citizenship and address Trump’s demands to limit legal immigration, but its fate is uncertain.

Ryan told reporters the votes would give Republicans “an actual chance at making law and solving this problem.” He also acknowledged the political pressure Republicans face to show their positions on the issue, saying the process will allow “the votes that everybody is looking for.”

Calling a process that takes many years (over 6 I believe... maybe many more) along with a background check for any crimes is not amnesty. It is also not DACA.

Any change in his position reflects the core problems (wall, lottery, chain migration and merit based system).

Paul Ryan
Jeff Flake
Bob Corker
Trey Gowdy
John McCain

Each one says they are leaving, but they never do.

If anyone wonders why so many GOP house members are not seeking reelection, this is why. I believe the CoC and the Koch brothers, etc. are paying them to be lame duck votes for amnesty.

They don’t care if we don’t like this, they don’t have to fight for their seats anymore. The timing of this makes sense. If Trump signs any amnesty bill, he’s done.

Corker will apply for a job at Trent Lott’s DC Lobbying Firm.
He could not be elected dog catcher here in TN.
Calling those of us who voted for Trump “cultist”.

“wall”

Canada now allows Mexicans to fly to Canada without a visa.

Trudeau probably would personally pay to bus them to the mainly unguarded US/Canadian border at this point since he is so angry with Trump.

A tough customer incentive E-verify program is needed, such as, spot an illegal and get 8% off your landscaping/cleaning/construction contract.

Will Wal-Mart check the employees of contractors (and their subcontractors) to get 8% off a cleaning contract? Si

Will contractors (and their subcontractors) risk an 8% contractual forfeiture? No way, Jose

Will illegals have a hard time getting a job in the USA? Si

“End anchor baby nonsense.”

That is the most important reform needed.

The rest is just good law enforcement.

As for “chain migration”

change “children, spouses, parents of a citizen”

to “minor dependent children, spouse, parents of a citizen”

at a minimum.

“Where is the wall funding?”

I can’t seem to find any wall specifications on line.

The bills don’t have anything specific.

“wall”

I’m starting to think two parallel nine-foot concrete walls would be better.

Just yank away the ladders and the scofflaws would have climbed into a holding tank.

It gets awfully hot in the Southwest.

And you know how long it can take a federal employee to process paperwork.

Two-fer:

Deliver functional treason to his evil masters when it cannot hurt Ryan on his way out but can hurt Trump and the RNC House majority.
