My favorite Singapore story was an incident some years ago where the young adult son of a senior government official was arrested for some minor crime like vandalism or a public nuisance offense.

Rather than use his authority to get the kid out of trouble, the father made a big deal of issuing a public apology.

Then he had the kid flogged with bamboo sticks.

On national television.

Note to self: Don't do anything stupid in Singapore.
