The tariffs are levied on the importer. US importers of Chinese cars pay 2.5% while Chinese importers of US cars pay 25%. Hence, it makes US cars far less competitive on the Chinese market. There is a reason why we run a trade deficit with almost every country in the world.

The US is the least protectionist country in the world. Yes, the US consumer benefits, but it kills American workers and incentivizes moving US companies outside of the country.

Canada and Mexico have been aiding and abetting the Chinese by allowing their goods to transit thru their countries taking advantage of NAFTA tariffs.

It’s gonna be a tough slog reversing all this. But, I supposed Trumps normal method of dealing will prevail. Shoot for the moon and settle for what he gets.
