I’ve heard people say happy Memorial Day and we do quote celebrate it

When I was young we were mostly centered on poppies and Flanders field

WWII was too fresh and most dads had been there....young dads

Memorial Day had more roots in the Great War then....my grandfathers war

Same here.

We never wished “happy Memorial Day” to each other. I see them doing it on TV sometimes, but I always cringe when I hear it.

Memorial Day always had started with a visit to a cemetery to stop in front of relatives’ graves to say a silent prayer. If we all could pack into the station wagon to get there early, we’d actually catch a prayer service lead by a local pastor. In our family, it had always been (and still is) a day of solemn remembrance followed by picnics/fun later in the day.

Yep, I’ve heard “have a great weekend “ several times the last 2 days...I think it’s just habit of some who don’t think too deep. NY paper is full of Memorial Day sales, etc ..again the multitude of different cultures are clueless in the history of what this sacred day stands for.....
