OK OK, you guys win. People say it... But why?
Umm, that's the point of this piece... So few people now have close friends and family serving in the military that it's foreign to them. I hear it every year, and have this year also, along with "thanks for your service". I tell them I have a day; Veterans Day, and active duty have Armed Forces Day. Today is not about those who serve, but those who made the ultimate sacrifice. They usually look at me like I'm being rude for correcting them. Pieces like this one, by an author who did far more for his country than anyone criticizing him here, are a good reminder to those who have forgotten that Memorial Day is not about sales, picnics and beer. Those who have lost friends and family will not forget, but many have.
