Mayor Bill de Blasio said Sunday that the scent of legal weed is in the air and he wants New Yorkers to feel free to blaze away in public without fear of getting tossed in jail.
In an unexpected announcement, City Hall said Hizzoner was eager to see the NYPD stop busting pot smokers and instead hand out summonses for sidewalk toking.
With marijuana legalization likely to occur in our state in the near future, it is critical our city plans for the public safety, health and financial consequences involved, de Blasio said in a statement.

Trying to keep him and his family out of jail!
But don’t go selling those loosies... big tobacco is evil!
Imagine The sidewalks, this guy is a total kook.
He sees the handwriting on the wall....so do most. They’re going to legalize it. Like it or not that is happening.
Why waste taxpayer money on arresting, charging, jailing and criminally prosecuting people for smoking pot?
I'm trying to sort thru how they ban cigarettes in public places, larges soda purchases, yet smoking a joint walking down Broadway is fine and dandy?
Walking down Broadway?
I wonder how the hypocrites are going to reconcile the health effects of second hand smoke of the evil cigarettes vs harmless marijuana.
This will only end well for the elites who salivate at the thought of enslaving the population.
We’re going to find out that life in America was better when a citizen had a bottle of whiskey on the table and a pack of Marlboro’s in his shirt pocket.
Houston, Texas already has such a policy in place and it is working out fine.
If it works in Houston, why would it not work in New York City?
Top Democrats have introduced a number of bills to push for the federal legalization of marijuana....29 states have broad medical marijuana laws now and nine states have OK’d recreational use.
Chuck Schumer announced a short while ago his intention to introduce a bill to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level which would remove it from the controlled substances list.....However it wouldn’t completely wipe out the ability of the federal government to enforce certain controls. Federal regulators would still be able to penalize instances ‘of drug trafficking’ between legalized states and states that have not chosen to OK the use.
They’ll be offering “bars” to smoke the stuff with a ‘speciality’ license I bet.
Oh - a single one is a ‘loosie’?
Ha! I thought it was a ‘Lucy’.
Thanks for clearing that up for me!
“Houston, Texas already has such a policy in place and it is working out fine.”
What criteria are you using to conclude that “it’s working out fine”?
Democrats have figured out that if they don’t have illegal immigrants’ votes, they need potheads’ votes.
I'm interested in that too :)
Houston has had that policy for a year and there has not been an increase in violent crime, nor any kind of crime and the county is saving money by not jailing people with small amounts.
More significantly, there are more police on the streets as they do not have to process suspects with small amounts of pot.
What Works in Texas, will work in New York.
See 17.
More Texas policies should be adopted by New York.
It’s legal in La-La Land, and the “pharmacies” are giving real pharmacists the sense that they’re in the wrong business.
$$$$$!!!!
Any stats on usage, kids see that's it's fine and more take it up?
