Not sure about that, but violent crime is down and taxpayers are saving money.
New York City needs to be more like Texas, and De Blasio is taking a step in that direction.
The first article about this was about a week ago with the mayor lamenting too many black people were getting arrested for pot smoking and he was going to see about changing some policies. At first it implied he was just going to go after white pot smokers. We’ll see how this plays out.
Uh Oh! Sessions may just wake up when he hears this. After all pot heads are the real criminals, not those who spy on presidential campaigns and leak classified information and such.
Because it smells like AZZ.
“Do you mind if I light up a doobie?”
“No, do you mind if I wipe feces on your face?”
The sidewalks will stink. They already do now. Imagine how bad it will get.
I retired as a NY State Correctional Sergeant in 2003, and was told when I first started my career, that the only stupid question, was the one I didn't ask. We were also told that if it was against the law on the street, then it was against the law behind bars. I told him they'd be opening up a can of worms if they do legalize marijuana, since it's presently against the law, not only on the streets, but in the State prisons. Are they suddenly going to eliminate the prison rule on marijuana, and stop disciplining inmates who have possession of weed, or test positive for its use? Are they going to start letting it come in via the packages that inmates receive? Are they going to let them buy weed via their commissary purchases? They've already outlawed smoking inside NY State's prison buildings to discourage people from smoking. But if the State legitimizes smoking weed, people will be smoking more.
I hope they don't think that letting cons smoke weed will stop them from extorting each other, will stop them from stealing from each other, or will stop them from assaulting each other. It won't. In fact, by throwing marijuana into the mix, it could only exacerbate those problems, putting inmate and staff safety into even more jeopardy.
It will be interesting to see how NY handles this. de Blasio is a moron, basically telling NYPD not to enforce the laws on the book. In my mind, that is an illegal order, and can, and should be ignored by the department. Can you imagine all the cons at Rikers, and the officers as well, lighting up a joint, whenever and wherever they want? Oh, I can see de Blasio allowing it, but if he rules it out, I can also see some liberal judge siding with a convict if de Blasio or the State decides everybody but cons can smoke weed. What a mess this could become.
I’m just concerned about saving the taxpayers money and increasing public safety.
Taking a cure from Texas, this move by De Blasio will save money and will put more police on the streets.
That’s a win/win.
all good points.
The NY Legistature doesnt do anything without shaking down interested parties and political groups.
My guess is NY Legislature legalized weed it would be connected to licensing of importers, distributors and sellers. And, those license might be a challenge to get initially. => Cha-Ching!
